Next in line: Hong Kong's Jimmy Lai inches closer to listing
Article Abstract:
Hong Kong media bad-boy Jimmy Lai hopes to list his Next Media Group early in 1996, 18 months after the effort began. Lai says merchant bankers are nervous because he is vocally anti-communist, but they contend that a small offer and a low share price (eight times projected earnings for the year ending March 31, 1996) leave little room for profit. Lai launched Apple Daily in June and claims its splashy style, extensive use of color, and mass appeal have pushed its circulation to 300,000; competitors are fighting back.

Downwardly mobile; Hutchison Telecom ignites a Hong Kong price war
Article Abstract:
Hutchison Telecom set off a price war over mobile telephone handsets in Jan when it cut the cost by a third; Pacific Link Communications and Hongkong Telecom CSL followed suit quickly. While the move may be clever, because Hutchison has more room than any of its competitors to add new subscribers, analysts are divided over its brilliance: some say it was a desperation effort to protect sliding market share. In the meantime Beijing is dawdling over approval for six new challengers in the cellular market.
