Hell's hangover: Parkinson's disease

The bad side effects of the the designer drug MPTP on a group of party-goers has aided researchers looking for a cure in Parkinson's Disease. The symptoms caused by the drug mimic the disease so by injecting the drug, researchers can duplicate symptoms in monkeys. GM1 ganlioside is a promising treatment.

Waste not, want not: treating blood disease
Article Abstract:
Blood stem cells contained in umbilical cords and placenta can be used instead of blood morrow transplants to treat people with blood diseases such as leukemia and sickle cell anemia. The advantages of stem cells over bone marrow transplants are discussed.

Researchers have found evidence that fetal brain tissue transplants may help victims of Parkinson's to live until a healthy old age. Fetal brain tissue may sustain the substantia nigra, a region of the brain which deteriorates because of Parkinson's.
