Helping the world's poorest
Article Abstract:
There are 42 Highly Indebted Poor Countries (HIPCs) where poverty is a serious problem, and conditions are worsening in a number of these countries. Richer countries tend to be found in temperate zones, and the problems they face are often different from those of poorer countries, while research tends to focus on richer countries' problems. This is reflects in patents and scientific papers published world wide. Malaria and AIDS are particular problems in poorer countries, and agriculture presents particular challenges in tropical zones. There are several measures that could be taken to alleviate the problem, including more funding for international agencies.

Helping the poorest
Article Abstract:
There is a widening gap between rich and poor countries, and child mortality and deaths from infectious diseases tend to occur in poorer countries. Ill health is a cause of poverty, the World Bank argues. Drug companies tend to focus on illnesses that affect people in rich countries. Alliances are being set up by the World Bank and other organizations and the pharmaceutical industry to try to tackle this issue. Nutrition and public health arrangements also need to be improved. There are other changes that could be made to local government and in the behavior of individuals.

Making it work
Article Abstract:
The US has sought to manage a transition to world capitalism following the end of communism. Cuts in interest rates are needed to tackle the crisis in 1998, but changes are also needed over the longer term. World financial institutions have not been able to tackle the crisis. The US has been reluctant to pay to help poorer countries such as Russia and those in Africa. Income inequality is greater than ever in the history of humankind. Developed economies should dialog with developing countries since they are mutually interdependent.
