Here come dumb PCs; will shoppers log on?
Article Abstract:
Several computer companies are now offering 'dumb PCs' to consumers who do not want to spend large amounts of money on sophisticated systems and programs that rapidly become obsolete. Acer Inc.'s dumb PC, called AcerBasic, will offer only four megabytes of RAM and a 100-megabyte hard drive and will cost only $500. It will not be equipped with a monitor because the PC will be plugged into a TV set. AcerBasic will compete with another dumb PC called the Network Computer, a joint project of Oracle Corp., Sun Microsystems and IBM.

Acer hits Siemens snags
Article Abstract:
The delay in the processing of the planned acquisition of Siemens-Nixdorf Informationssysteme AG's personal computer unit by Acer Inc may significantly affect the Taiwanese company's stock. Acer had already signed a memorandum of understanding to purchase Siemen's Augsburg, Germany PC plant on April 23, 1998. The agreement would improve Acer's international production by about 25% and cut costs. However, stock prices of Acer improved 6.2% to $1.15 due to a rally by investors during trading on the third week of July 1998.
