In deference of Dad: Deng Xiaoping's son hits out at party hardliners
Article Abstract:
Deng Xiaoping's eldest son lashed out in a July 9, 1996 speech at those who denigrate his father's legacy and would reduce the Deng family's personal power. Deng Pufang, a paraplegic and president of the Chinese Federation for the Disabled, attacked both neoconservatives close to party head Jiang Zemin and leftists who deplore Deng Xiaoping's promotion of rapid economic growth and acceptance of greater prosperity in coastal regions. A June 17 and 18 gathering of scholars also sought to restore prestige to Deng's ideas.

Health hazard
Article Abstract:
It is likely that the flu virus carried by chickens in Hong Kong originated in China, which supplies around three-quarters of Hong Kong's chickens. However, the Chinese authorities have been very slow to react to the possible danger to human health from this virus. All national Chinese-language newspapers have failed to report the outbreak in Hong Kong, and no details have been issued by the Chinese Ministry of Health about its response to the problem.
