Here come the titans: consumer electronics firms are muscling in
Article Abstract:
An increasing number of consumer electronics firms including Sony Corp and Sierra On-Line Inc are entering the booming video games market as software developers. Both Sony and Sierra have set up offices in Hollywood and are producing video game versions of popular movies on CD-ROMs with the help of Silicon Graphic work-stations. Video game makers, however, do not feel threatened by the entry of the consumer electronics companies because they feel that the companies will find it difficult to adjust to the consumers' demand for extremely low prices. Moreover, the consumer electronics companies lack the ability to develop games software on their own.

After the quake, not before
Article Abstract:
New approaches in seismological research emphasize further study of the physical mechanisms of earthquakes and ways of reducing the hazards they cause instead of trying to predict them. Institutions like the California Institute of Technology aim to broadcast information immediately after an earthquake to minimize fatalities and economic loss. Unfortunately, Japan's research into earthquakes and other geological forces is hindered by lack of funding.
