Hi-tech economics
Article Abstract:
Taiwan's high-tech companies are unlikely to be very negatively affected by the decline in the value of the Japanese yen, even though orders from Japanese concerns may fall. This is because the connections between Japanese and Taiwanese high-tech concerns are very close and cannot easily be broken, regardless of economic developments. The weaker yen may make it cheaper for Japan to produce high-tech equipment domestically, but it will be unlikely to invest in manufacturing the low-margin items that are now produced in very large numbers in Taiwan.

Local no more: Acer ousts Formosa Plastics from top spot
Article Abstract:
Computer maker Acer leapt to the top ranking in overall leadership in Far Eastern Economic Review's 1996 REVIEW 200 survey of corporate leaders in Taiwan. The company is now a full-fledged international concern, with plans to list subsidiaries in 21 countries by 2000 and 1995 sales projected to reach $5.7 billion, a 77% year-on-year rise. Two other companies that scored well, Taiwan Semiconductor and United Microelectronics, did less well in the Long-Term Vision category than they deserved, say analysts.

Thumbs up
Article Abstract:
New overseas issues of Taiwan high-technology shares have had great success recently, thanks to a hot industry, low price-earnings ratios, and being based in a country closed to most foreign investors. Siliconware Precision Industries and Advanced Semiconductor Engineering have both found strong demand. Upcoming floats by United Microelectronics and Acer could challenge that, though. UM's $500 million under Morgan Stanley's management is the largest ever by a Taiwan company.
