High life in Hong Kong
Article Abstract:
Bamboo scaffolding is common in the Hong Kong construction industry although it is considered obsolete in other parts of Asia. It is used in China, but with double layers and space for platforms. Hong Kong workers may drop tools from this scaffolding, or fall off. Workers tend not to abide by safety regulations and they argue that accidents tend to happen to 'cowboys,' freelance workers who lack qualifications. Scaffolders do not have to have qualifications or licenses so the term 'cowboy' is difficult to define. Scaffolders are attracted by high salaries.

Politically incorrect
Article Abstract:
The Tropenmuseum in Amsterdam displays a distinct attitude and point of view in its newly updated Southeast Asia section, focusing on Indonesia, where the Netherlands long had a presence. Refreshingly straightforward captions and introductions accompany presentations of authentic modern huts as well as mega-city streets. Indonesia's development policies and social problems also receive direct criticism. Puppets in one case depict figures from the country's independence struggle, and films and activities are available.

Forest Trump; for this Dutch trader, the rainforest is like a box of treasures
Article Abstract:
Jenne De Beer trades worldwide in non-timber rainforest products, linking forest tribes with non-governmental agencies to encourage trade in nuts, dyes, medicines, and more. He stumbled into this work as a doctoral student in anthropology, after agreeing to help newfound forest friends publicize the harms wrought by mining, logging, and tourism. His work involves long walks rather than jet flights, and deals made over fires and fiery drinks rather than in lobbies over beer. He operates out of Arnhem, the Netherlands.
