Lebanon is holding a general election, with the incumbent premier Rafiq Hariri enjoying the backing of Syria and expected to win handily. Hezbollah, the political militia in southern Lebanon, continues to have popular support both because of its resistance to Israel and its social service activities.

A boycott by the Christian political parties of the Syrian-sponsored elections of Sep 6, 1992 has allowed Hizbollah and its Islamic fundamentalist allies to garner a bloc of at least 20 seats in the Lebanese parliament. Both the Christians and Syrian Pres Assad may come to regret their actions.

The Syrian-influenced Lebanese government held the first parliamentary elections in 20 years, and only two candidates favored by the government won seats. Shia fundamentalists of Hizbullah won most of the seats.
