In Hungary, about 75% of the 4mn houses and flats require renovation, reports Bau Data. This requires investments of Ft 3.8bn. About 1.28bn houses are older than 50 years, 400,000 between 40 and 50 years, 480,000 between 30 and 40 years, and 810,000 between 10 and 30 years. The Hungarian market for housing construction will grow from FT 250bn to FT 300bn in 1998. About Ft 64bn was for renovation. In 1997 28,000 houses and flats will build newly.

In Hungary, the market for cleaning of offices and retail outlets is estimated at Ft 40mn or DM 371mn in 1997. Among the 2,800 service providers, the companies with more than 100 employees have a market share of 7-10%. Demand for cleansing agents and machines amounted to about Ft 4bn in 1997. Demand is to grow by 10-15% in 1998. While the machines are mainly imported, cleansing agents are from local production.

Hungary will invest Ft 500-650bn over a period of 15 years to improve waste water handling. Currently 45% of households are connected to a sewerage system. The country aims to reach 67.5% in 2010. The country will also have to upgrade existing sewerage plants. In Budapest, only 20% of the plants meet EU standards. The investments required will partly be financed by the EU's Phare program.
