Hollow victory: opposition boycott mars election's credibility
Article Abstract:
Bangladesh remained plagued by political strife as opposition leader Sheikh Hasina Wajed forced a nationwide strike and threatening violence during the Feb 15, 1996, election. Only 10% of voters cast ballots, and Prime Minister Khaleda Zia's Bangladesh National Party easily won 201 of the 300 parliament seats. Hasina, head of the Awami League, promptly called for another three-day strike starting Feb 24. Hasina claims Khaleda's government is corrupt and that a neutral caretaker government must oversee polls to ensure fairness.
