Hot-seat experience: but Anwar plays it cool as acting premier
Article Abstract:
Anwar Ibrahim has faced a difficult leadership test during his first stint as Malaysia's acting premier, with civil war in Cambodia and domestic crises. Many diplomats and political analysts have rated him highly for cracking down on corruption and instructing the central bank not to defend the ringgit. He also brought in new transparency measures to government. However some believe that he has avoided making hard decisions, and that his style of leadership is not suited to a multi-racial Malaysia. There was also concern about his soft line with controversial Islamic issues.

Heir unapparent
Article Abstract:
Anwar Ibrahim was until recently widely seen as the chosen successor to Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad. However, his political future now seems increasingly uncertain. His implicit challenge to Mahathir at the annual general assembly of the ruling United Malays National Organization in Jun 1998 has failed, and he could even be removed as deputy leader of the party. His survival will ultimately be determined by Mahathir's attitude towards him. He may retain his post if Mahathir remains neutral towards him in the party elections in 1999.

No means maybe: Deputy Premier Anwar demurs as his star rises
Article Abstract:
Deputy Premier Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim of Malaysia seems unwilling to challenge Prime Minister Datuk Seri Mahathir Mohamad for leadership of the ruling United Malays National Organization (Umno) party. Most analysts expect some sort of amicable transition of power, more likely at the party vote in 1999 rather than 1996, but already Mahathir, 70, has given 48-year-old Anwar most of the party's reins. However, Anwar's supporters may have other ideas, given recent trends, and the party constitution gives them a way to push him to power.
