Home fires burning: budget turmoil mars prime minister's overseas trip
Article Abstract:
Budgetary disputes and other problems continued to bedevil Australian Prime Minister Paul Keating as he left for a visit to Britain and other countries in Sep 1993. Keating's difficulties include gaining minority party support for his budget in the Senate; unexpectedly strong opposition to his proposals for new taxes; and widespread unease about his policies concerning aboriginal land rights, industrial relations and plans to make Australia a republic. Keating will probably compromise on the budget to avoid an election that his Labor party would probably lose.

Off with our head: Keating plays politics with the queen
Article Abstract:
Australian Prime Minister Paul Keating's June 7, 1995 announcement of a plan for a 1999 referendum on making the country a republic leaves the electorate divided but suspicious. Most Australians favor a republic, but nearly all want to elect a president directly, rather than through Parliament. Some suspect Keating is distracting them from harder questions, and that he wants to be the head of such a state. Proposed presidential powers remain ill-defined. The opposition has not yet exploited these weaknesses.
