Honda takes lead in race to launch Asia car with Thailand assembly plan

Honda Motor Company Ltd. (Honda) announced that it will begin assembly of its Asia car in Thailand in Apr. 24, 1996. Provisionally known as the EK car, the new vehicle is especially designed for Asian customers and Honda plans to assemble it in seven countries in the region. The EK is a small four-door car with a 1.3-liter, fuel-injected, 16-valve powerplant. Honda has not revealed the price of the EK but sources disclosed that it will be cheaper than the Honda Civic.

General Motors Corp. (GM) has decided to put up a $750-million automobile manufacturing plant in Thailand after more than a year of deliberations on how best to enter the fast-growing Asian car market. The decision quashes the hopes of the Philippines to host the plant, despite offering generous financial incentives to GM. Thailand's booming car market, Southeast Asia's largest, was a major factor in the GM decision.

Korea's Kia makes inroads in Thailand
Article Abstract:
Korean car manufacturer Kia Motors Corp. will be entering the passenger-car market in Thailand by pricing their cars cheap to compete with the Japanese. It will also be competing with Korean car manufacturers such as Hyundai Motor Co. and Daewoo Motor Co. Korean cars are often priced 10-15% lower than Japanese cars.
