Hong Kong could rest easier with some elbow room
Article Abstract:
Many of Hong Kong's retired populace live in the Tai Kok Tsui district, where each dingy dormitory space, called cages, is not much bigger than the bed space. Controversy erupted when property magnate Li Ka Shing asked Hong Kong authorities to stop certain reclamation projects in the harbor to keep property prices up. Meanwhile, Tung Wah Group of Hospitals chairwoman and socialite Deborah Kwan said that cage conditions are not as bad as the media portrayed them. It so happens that Tung Wah Group is funded by retirees rent payments. A prominent Hong Kong newspaper challenged Kwan to try living in a cage in return for cash donations to Tung Wah Group, but she refused.

Hong Kong's policy dilemma
Article Abstract:
Hong Kong's manufacturing industry is faced with a possible policy shift where the government will encourage companies to go 'high tech' and abandon their traditional business methods. Hong Kong manufacturers account for only 9% of the GDP and they have long thrived on cheap labor. The policy might be directed towards raising labor prices to a point where businesses may be forced to replace laborers with machines or relocate to another area.

Another call for action: report seeks aid for Hong Kong's industry
Article Abstract:
A Better Hong Kong Foundation report demands that the government encourage technological investments in Hong Kong. Easier recruitment policies for mainland Chinese engineers and the development of a science park are the two other projects suggested by the report. Hong Kong, which has concentrated on its cheap labor force, has declined from pursuing technological advances which is the reason for its weakness in applied technology.
