Hong Kong intervention changes stock-market landscape
Article Abstract:
Hong Kong investors witnessed a significant increase in the Hang Seng Index for hedge funds for the second week of August 1998 following the reported acquisition of several stocks by the central government. These intervention measures, which caused the market value of hedge funds to rise, were instrumental in warding off speculative attacks. However, Hong Kong's financial markets continue to be discouraging for investors since the government has expressed little concern over risk premiums.

Foot persists in battle with Templeton: bitter dispute continues as proxy statement becomes focus of attention
Article Abstract:
Investor George Foot has threatened to sue Templeton Dragon Fund if it does not remove the clause that keeps the fund from trading at other markets other than an exchange. Foot wants the fund to be converted into an open-ended fund which allows the fund to be traded without the discount. Fund manager Mark Mobius maintains that Mr. Foot is part of a growing wave of closed-end fund raisers and that he is doubtful if he represents the interest of the majority of shareholders.
