Hong Kong media pressed to toe the Beijing line
Article Abstract:
China has strongly indicated that it will curtail freedom of the press in Hong Kong when it regains control of the British colony on July 1, 1997. Chinese officials have said that they expect Hong Kong media to steer clear of controversial issues and to demonstrate patriotism. One media activity that will not be tolerated is the promotion of independence for Hong Kong, Taiwan and Tibet. Some newspaper publishers are finding that they can lose lucrative Chinese advertising contracts if they do not comply with Beijing's demands.

Tiananmen's ghosts haunt Hong Kong-China ties
Article Abstract:
Political observers note that China's tolerance towards Hong Kong's insistence on commemorating the deaths in Tiananmen will set an intriguing atmosphere in the handover of Hong Kong to China. Specifically, the tolerance shown by China will show its respect for Hong Kong's political and social institutions, which it has promised to preserve after the handover to protect Hong Kong's position in the Asian economic activity.
