Colony voters' message is clear, reception isn't
Article Abstract:
Hong Kong voters confirmed their pro-democracy stand during the recent election to the 60-seat Legislative Council (Legco) in the British colony. Led by Chairman Martin Lee, the Democratic Party won 19 of the 25 seats while the pro-China Democratic Alliance for the Betterment of Hong Kong won merely six seats. As Hong Kong's legislative body, Legco will decide on key issues that will affect the colony's social welfare and economy before and after 1997, when China regains Hong Kong. However, China has vowed to abolish Legco after the 1997 takeover.

Patten says he's confident about Hong Kong's future
Article Abstract:
UK Gov. Chris Patten says the rising tensions between China and Taiwan will have strong implications to China's relationship with Hong Kong. However, he is confident that Hong Kong will remain solid despite the recent events between China and Taiwan because China has agreed not to interfere with Hong Kong after the latter is turned over in 1997, as stated in its international agreements with the UK. Patten believes that Hong Kong's pluralistic character will be the key to its success inspite of China's presence.
