Hong Kong needs supply-side skills to tame prices
Article Abstract:
The threat of inflation in Hong Kong stems from the city's reluctance to admit its potential for stimulating inflation with its production and monetary policies. Hong Kong needs to support a supply-side policy in both goods and services to stem inflationary pressures. Hong Kong is still reliant on the demand for its products and services in governing the formulation of economic policies. The Hong Kong dollar's peg on the US dollars is likely to produce unsavory results especially in interest rate policy. This can be corrected by allowing Hong Kong to increase its land supply and allowing prices in deregulated industries to be pegged according to cost and not inflation.

Who profited from the intervention in Hong Kong?
Article Abstract:
The Hong Kong government would do well to temper its current assaults on international currency speculators, whom the government blames for hurting the currency. The government should rather consider that the currency speculators' actions may only be an indication and not the root cause of the city's economic woes. The chief executive of the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, Joseph Yam, has contended that intervention was needed since speculations pose threats to the Hong Kong economy.
