Hong Kong voters speak out: they want democracy, but many find pro-China party acceptable
Article Abstract:
The recent elections in Hong Kong were not the resounding defeat for the Democratic Alliance for Betterment of Hong Kong (DAB) that many pundits have proclaimed, nor were they an unreserved victory for the Democratic Party. The Beijing-friendly DAB gained five seats, compared to the Democrats' increase of four, and where the two parties competed directly, overall votes were very close despite the Democrats' greater experience. Beijing and Hong Kong should listen to all political groupings to understand each other.

Chan: an independent spirit: her appointment would do wonders for civil-service morale
Article Abstract:
Anson Chan would probably be appointed the first chief executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region were it not for China's disenchantment with Chris Patten and changes in British policy following Tiananmen Square. Chan, Patten's top assistant, has sterling credentials for the job, seems averse to democracy as inefficient, is conservative, and has appropriate ancestry, as well as being hugely popular with Hong Kong's residents. She should certainly be among those the Selection Committee considers.

Lo: a long, puzzling record
Article Abstract:
Preparatory Committee member Lo Tak-shing did well to proclaim his interest in being the area's first chief executive, opening to public inquiry a mixed record in the hope of drumming up more than his current 1% support. Lo has long been an outstanding member of the Hong Kong community, with relevant experience as a legislator, former Executive Council member, corporate board member, lawyer, and publisher. However, several factors give the impression that he is adept and comfortable at cutting hidden deals.
