Clinton and Jiang stand to benefit from trade pacts
Article Abstract:
Some observers believe that the greatest near-term gains from the recently concluded US-China trade agreement are political and that the biggest beneficiaries are Pres. Bill Clinton and Chinese Communist Party head Jiang Zemin. They point out that the agreements are not likely to result in any immediate economic benefit. However, these agreements have substantially cleared away the animosity which had threatened to flare up into a trade war between the two countries.

Improved Sino-U.S. ties may aid Jiang, not Taiwan
Article Abstract:
Bilateral relations between China and the US improved with the visit of US Undersecretary of State Peter Tarnoff to Beijing. Sino-US relations were affected by the unofficial visit of Taiwan Pres. Lee Teng-hui to the US, which Chinese officials saw as an affront to their political leadership. The visit was also interpreted by Chinese officials as a challenge to assert Taiwan's independence.
