How the experts see it: no consensus
Article Abstract:
A panel of top fund managers disagrees on the prospects for stocks in virtually every Asian country as well as on other economic barometers. In general they agree it has been a poor year for Asia's markets, thanks to domestic problems and the attractiveness of the US and other mature markets. The coming quarter seems more promising, though not compelling. The Japanese market is attractive, with recent institutional selling for technical reasons pushing prices down slightly. Taiwan and Hong Kong draw the most mixed responses, and the Philippines are unattractive.

Geared returns
Article Abstract:
Thailand offers a plethora of attractive closd-end mutual funds with a history of outperforming the market, thanks in part to unusually good mgmt. In 1993 and 1994 the SET index rose 88% and dropped 19%, but the average equity fund rose 106% in each year. Mutual fund investors pay 10% taxes on dividend incomes, rather than the 15% capital gains tax. Closed-end funds with early redemption dates offer a chance to ride the decreasing discount. The Kamrai Tawee Fund, a split-capital fund, is especially interesting.

How the experts see it
Article Abstract:
Asian stock markets have faced a difficult year in 1996 and this could lead some investors to move away from equities. Cyclical factors have affected markets as have longer-term factors such as low profitability for many companies. Growth rates have diverged in Asia after a period of divergence to 1991. Short-term factors which could affect share prices are petroleum prices and US interest rates. A rise in the value of the US dollar would help Asian exports.
