Housing benefit: the decaying concrete-framed WCA warehouse on Bristol's waterfront has been converted by Architecton into housing association flats
Article Abstract:
The WCA Warehouse was one of the first concrete-framed structures built in Bristol, in about 1910. Plans to convert the building into social housing flats were shelved in 1988 following the decline in the housing market, but the scheme was reassessed in 1991. The winning scheme for the flats in 1986 was won by Architecton, and it was finally given the go ahead in 1994. The project involved extensive repairs to the Grade II listed building, and it has been designed for wheelchair access throughout. The roof was strengthened to support further flats, and the building now features an internal courtyard.

Putting retail to rights: the importance of shop design
Article Abstract:
Before a shopping centre can be refurbished, the existing fabric must be surveyed and a design analysis made of the building and its performance. The major design factors include the effect of the existing centre on the its environment; shoppers' amenities; servicing and delivery; and financial and management issues. Design features which appear to be consistently successful include integrating signing, graphics and finishes, and implementing a low-maintenance, long-life, low-energy solution. Refurbishment costs and design are affected by regulations on smoke control and means of escape.
