Hitachi and Mitsubishi will cease chip production in U.S
Article Abstract:
Mitsubishi Electric Corp. and Hitachi Ltd. are discontinuing their respective semiconductor production operations in the US. Mitsubishi says it will terminate memory-module assembly operations, as well as assembly and testing of 16-megabit dynamic random-access memory chips (DRAMs) and 64-megabit DRAMS, in November 1998, at a facility run by Mitsubishi Semiconductor America, in Durham, NC. On the other hand, Hitachi notes that it adjourned production at its facility in Irving, TX, which manufactures static random-access memory chips, four-megabit DRAMS and microcontrollers. Amid production overcapacity and consequent price deflations in the global memory-chip arena, the two Japanese companies are attempting to focus production to attain greater economies of scale, according to analysts.
