How Angola's war protects polio
Article Abstract:
Polio is on the increase in Angola, and it is difficult to eradicate due to war and poor infrastructure. There have been murders of charity workers in Angola in 1999, there are mines in part of the countryside, and air travel is the only way to reach some locations. Aircraft can be hit by missiles. The crowded refugee camps also provide conditions in which polio can spread easily. Mineral wealth in locations such as Angola, Sierra Leone and Congo means that conflicts can be prolonged.

Queuing up to die
Article Abstract:
The Angolan government is drafting young men in a fight against rebels from UNITA. The draftees may be trained for two weeks and then be confronted with modern weapons owned by UNITA. Many children from the elite have left the country, while some young men who are unemployed have volunteered to fight. UNITA controls roads and there is no agreement on corridors for aid to be delivered. The war is becoming bitter and the first casualties will be recruits and civilians.
