How Barclay's became a force in ETFs
Article Abstract:
In four years, Barclays Global Investors (BGI), a San Francisco-based mutual fund unit of Barclays PLC, has turned a once-obscure niche in the mutual fund market into a booming sector of the industry and, as a result, has launched itself into the ranks of the industry's largest companies. Its decision to commit its resources to the development and marketing of exchange-traded funds has paid off for the company, which can now boast a lineup of 97 of the funds. Even its main competitor, State Street Global Advisors, which introduced the market's first exchange-traded fund years ago, acknowledges BGI's success in attracting investors.
