How Nontraditional Have Spearheaded Philippine Export Growth
Article Abstract:
During the 1970s, the Philippines advanced to the level of a major supplier of manufactured exports among the less developed countries. In 1970 its exports equalled more than one hundred and forty million dollars worth of business, but by 1980 they had grown to nearly three billion dollars. Prior to 1970, nine-tenths of Philippines exports were of a traditional nature: lumber, sugar, coconut, copper and iron ore. In ten years time, new exports were half of the total exports. These new exports include electronic items and handmade purses. The government incentives and facilities contributed to this rise in non-traditional exports, as have independent entrepreneurs. For quite some time, the Philippines was so involved in import-substitution efforts that it ignored the possibility of export development, which exacerbated balance of payment problems. In 1970, the Export Incentives Act was passed in response to problematic import levels. Small and medium sized production firms overcame unfamiliarity with the market environment to prosper.
