UK Recs resort to scorched earth defences
Article Abstract:
The UK's privatized regional electricity companies are expected to increase their gearing levels as a defence against hostile takeover bids. The practice of returning spare cash to shareholders is a last resort for the previously state-owned utilities, which were left with relatively low gearing following the first round of flotations in 1990. Industry observers are awaiting the defence tactics of Manweb following a hostile bid from Scottish Power.
