Britain was one of the few industrial nations to drastically reduce its public spending, as measured as a percentage of gross domestic product, during the 1980s. This places it in a much more economically competitive position for the '90s, but there is little learn from other nations if the trend is to continue.

Article Abstract:
The current-account deficit is a poor measure of the international financial strength of Britain. A major flaw is the exclusion of capital gains from the current account balance. Capital gains make up a large part of the returns on investments and equities.
