How the experts see it
Article Abstract:
Investment fund managers in Asia expect defensive investment to predominate early in 1995 as US interest rates continue to rise. The expert panel advises several short-term shelters, including Japanese manufacturers and the currencies of New Zealand, Singapore, and Malaysia. Some expect Southeast Asian economies to boom in 1995 but the stock markets to do poorly. They remain especially cautious regarding Hong Kong, where property values could fall further as mortgages rise. Most see good deals in nearly every sector, however.

How the experts see it: slim pickings
Article Abstract:
The Review's panel of experts agrees that Asia currently has few attractive stocks, though actions by the US Federal Reserve Board could influence the region. The panel, consisting of Elizabeth Tran, William Kaye, Graham Muirhead, and Winnie Lee, does find Taiwan, S Korea, Australia, New Zealand, and Japan (aside from banking) moderately attractive. The Philippines face a particularly sharp downside, and monetary growth there hints at incipient inflation.

How the experts see it: watch your step
Article Abstract:
Leading fund managers and investment officers predict an unstable market for Asian equities in particular and an uncertain one globally as the Japanese and US economies move in opposite directions. Several have significant cash positions, though generally less than six months ago. The US may be in a serious currency crisis, while Japan may even have entered a deflationary spiral, and the yen is unlikely to strengthen further against the dollar.
