Howard, seeking a smooth transition, yields few surprises in new government
Article Abstract:
Australian Prime Minister John Howard, who was elected Mar. 2, 1996 in a landslide victory that ended the Labor Party's 12-year reign, had few surprises in his cabinet. Most of the members of his cabinet came from his party, a coalition of the Liberal and National parties. It included National Party leader Tim Fischer as the new deputy prime minister and trade minister, lawyer Peter Costello as treasurer and former Liberal Party leader Alexander Downer as the new foreign minister.

Australia's Labor Party faces tough fight in March election
Article Abstract:
Its poor showing in recent opinion polls and the weakening of the economy could spell the doom of Australian Prime Min. Paul Keating's Labor Party in the upcoming Mar. 2, 1996 election. If it fails to retain its dominance of the parliament, Australia will see the end of the 13-year reign of the Labor Party. The incumbent party barely held on to power in Mar. 1993 when it narrowly defeated the conservative coalition of the Liberal and National parties.
