Brazilian citizens continue to victimized, tortured and murdered by the police, ten years after the military regime was overthrown. Pres Fernando Cardoso has launched a program of 168 proposals to curb human-rights abuses, included requiring police accused of crimes to face civilian courts.

Land rights, land wrongs: Brazil
Article Abstract:
MST is a group of poor landless farmers fighting for the right to own land in Brazil. The Brazilian government has unjustly denied them land, imprisoned their leaders, and has participated in the murder of some of them. The government is just starting to help the MST to right its wrongs.

Shareholders are beginning to exert more influence in European firms, where traditionally they have been powerless. A case in Italy involving the Ferruzzi group, which announced a 1992 loss of $1.4 billion has turned attention to the issue of shareholder rights.
