The newly formed Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ), led by Yukio Hatoyama, is hoping to win as much as 100 seats in the Diet in elections Oct 20, 1996. The media heartily welcomed the new party, but the public is afraid Hatoyama may compromise principles to share power with the Liberal Democratic Party.
