Shorts expands and improves

Shorts is the largest aerospace company owned by Bombardier of Canada and could see turnover exceed 355 million pounds sterling in 1992, and investments averaging 50 million pounds sterling/year. It has overcome problems such as stock shortages and has reduced the number of its contractors to 25 from 130. It is divided into five divisions, aircraft, defence systems, manufacturing, nacelles systems and the Fokker 100 project, and is a major partner in the Canadair Regional Jet (RJ), a variation of the Challenger business jet.

Hungary is evolving new planning rules after the end of communism. Planning decisions had been made centrally, but rural areas now have greater autonomy. Much of the rural population has emigrated to the cities. Environmental issues were of importance, but were secondary to economic development.
