Fissiparous fortunes and family feuds

Many Asian businesses are family-run conglomerates, but some of these conglomerates in countries such as Hong Kong and Taiwan are splitting up their companies. This is a progression towards a more modern business outlook, but is also occurring from family disputes.

Compagnie de Suez must divest some of its less profitable businesses if it wants to please its shareholders. The giant conglomerate lost estimated $340 million in 1992. Gerard Worms, the head of Suez, has promised investors that there will be downsizing.
