An early church perhaps the oldest in the world, found at Aqaba
Article Abstract:
Archaeological diggings in the city of Aqaba, Jordan, have unearthed the ancient Roman port of Aila which was founded in the first century BCE. A very old Christian church has been discovered by the shore. Its construction has been dated sometime near the end of the third century CE. The structure faced the East and has an adjacent cemetery, features in conventional church designs. The church had stone foundations and its walls were mostly made up of mudbrick. It may have been destroyed during a catastrophic earthquake that hit the area on May 19, 363.
