IATA forecasts new sunrise
Article Abstract:
The International Air Transport Assn has provided a more optimistic forecast which is driven by the general world economic growth trends, but more specifically by evidence of the Asian economies returning to full health and improvements in Russia encouraging traffic from Central and Eastern Europe. An improved economic situation in South America and an increasing number of bilateral agreements between North America and South America have also boosted the overall outlook for the global passenger market.

Traffic growth back to average
Article Abstract:
Preliminary statistics issued by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) for 1999 suggest that the rate of expansion of worldwide air traffic has shifted back towards the average of 7% that was achieved over the previous six years since 1992. This represents an improvement to the significant slowdown in 1998, when total traffic increased by barely 1%. ICAO data also indicated that total scheduled traffic increased by 5%, while international scheduled traffic increased by 6%.

Asia leads poor results
Article Abstract:
The International Civil Aviation Organisation reported that scheduled air traffic increased by only 1% in 1998, compared to 8% in 1997 and an average of 7% for the past five years. Statistics indicate that lower than 1 billion domestic passengers and 500 million international passengers boarded scheduled flights, almost the same as 1997 levels. The downturn is due mostly to the fall in Asian air traffic which accounts for over a third of overall figures.
