ICI's profit falls but beats expectations

Imperial Chemical Industries PLC (ICI) posted higher-than-expected earnings for the first-half of 1999. ICI's share value increased by 7.7% as a result. The company also said that it would downsize its central administrative staff by as much as two-thirds. This comes out to a drop to 300 workers from 900. ICI, a chemical firm based in Great Britain, is also planning to transfer out of its headquarters building in London. ICI posted 166 million pound sterling (252.9 million euros) in pretax profits for the period.
