Great expectations; votes hope June poll will end political chaos
Article Abstract:
Political campaigning leading to national elections to be held on Jun 12, 1996 in Bangladesh have been marred by violence, outrageous conduct by candidates and even a failed coup. Former army chief Gen. A. S. M. Nasim attempted an unsuccessful coup on May 20, 1996. Most citizens of Bangladesh hope the Jun 1996 polling will end the political chaos that has lasted for two years. Prime Minister Khaleda Zia was forced to call new elections on Mar 30, 1996 after first refusing opposition demands to hold elections for a new caretaker government.

Fundamentalist wrath: feminist author falls foul of Islamic conservatives
Article Abstract:
Soldiers of Islam, a minor fundamentalist group active chiefly in northeastern Bangladesh, demanded on Sep 23, 1993 that feminist author Taslima Nasreen be put to death for blasphemy and conspiring against Islam. The Bangladeshi government was slow to investigate, clearly fearful of stirring up religious animosity in the Muslim-majority country. Nasreen's writings have angered some devout Muslims because she advocates women's rights and attacks the brutality of men toward women.

Long arm of the law: fundamentalist leader to face trial
Article Abstract:
Bangladeshi fundamentalist leader Golam Azam, now in Pakistan, will be tried in his own country for political crimes. Azam had worked against Bangladesh's independence from Pakistan and sided with the latter during the bloody war of liberation. He fled to Pakistan but visited his homeland during friendlier regimes and during the height of Middle Eastern fundamentalism. The clamor for Azam's trials came from the victims of the war.
