Bausch & Lomb India Ltd, the makers of Ray Ban brand of premium sunglasses, has recently introduced prescription sunglasses for Ray Ban, for spectacle wearers. The sales of Ray Ban brand in 1997-98 was around 250,000 units in terms of volume. It has recently launched the Killer Loop brand of sunglasses in the country. Killer Loop brand is priced in the range Rs2,200 and Rs3,900 and is being selectively retailed in about seven cities at around 70 outlets. Ray Ban brand was earlier making sales through the 30-plus age segment, today it has been targeted on below-25 years segment, which has given the brand a volume growth in sales of 80 percent. The company is also focusing on direct sales to increase its business. It has about 75 percent share in the organised contact lens and lens care solution market. Sony has unveiled a new range of 19-inch and 21-inch colour monitors for professional users in CAD/CAM, graphics and animation. The monitors use a variable aperture grill of 0.25 mm in the centre and 0.27 mm in the corners allowing the electronic beam to vary its length from the centre to the edges without loss in brightness and contrast. An enhanced version of Digital Multiscan technology has been used for the monitors with faster CPU and an intelligent microchip called DPU-R for enhanced processor output and minimum distortion. PHILIPS ENTERS COLOUR MONITOR BUSINESS

Philips India Limited (PIL) has identified computer colour monitor business as its core area of focus for the coming years. PIL plans to set up a separate business unit for its colour monitor business. It plans to target original equipment manufacturers. Currently it imports the monitors. The monitors include 14 inch, 15 inch, 17 inch and 19 inch monitors and also 15 inch LCD monitors. (gs)(vr)
