Article Abstract:
India was successful in test-firing the 650-kg Akash surface-to- air missile at Chandipur-on-Sea near Balasore in Orissa on August 3, 1998. Akash missile can force intruding aircraft to fly at a very low level from 20 km across border reducing their range and bomb load. Akash's unique features include its capacity to strike several targets simultaneously. Akash can deliver 55 kilograms of both conventional and nuclear explosives and has a range of 25 kilometres. Akash uses integrated two-stage ramjet propulsion technology. (gs)
