ISRAEL: THE SUPERMARKET AND HYPERMARKET MARKET
Article Abstract:
In Israel, supermarkets and hypermarkets have high potential, since they represents only 40% of food purchases at present compared with 65% in Europe. The market is largely dominated by two local groups including Co-Op Blue Square, the leader in supermarkets and hypermarkets, with a turnover of FFr 6.5bn, plus 160 stores totalling 220,000 square metres in sales space. This quasi-monopoly situation makes it difficult for foreign groups to gain entrance. Shopping centres and specialised stores are booming in Israel. However, small traditional shops are declining and their disappearance seems to be inevitable.

Taiwan: A look at French retailers
Article Abstract:
Carrefour, which has been present in Taiwan since 1989, is several lengths a head of the competition. It now operates a network of 26 stores in partnership with the Uni-President group. Nevertheless, Carrefour must now face increasing competition, and particularly French competition. Casino has opened its eleventh store in Taiwan at Kaoshiung through Far Eastern Department Stores, its equally-owned subsidiary (Geant-Far Eastern). Auchan became the second biggest large retailers in Taiwan, behind Carrefour, after it acquired 67% of RT-Mart International. This chain, which was launched in 1997, now has 18 stores and made a turnover of NT$ 30bn in 2000, up 186% from 1999. Hypermarkets, which represented 4.8% of Taiwan's retail trade in 2000, appear to have a bright future on the island. According to a study by Credit Lyonnais, in 2000 hypermarkets' turnover rose 16.9% compared with 1999, while supermarkets' turnover held steady.
