If you never turn off your computer, are you really hurting anything?
Article Abstract:
Computers need not be turned off for any technical reason, as long as they are installed with a screen saver or screen shutdown mode. In fact, it may be best to leave them on to avoid thermal cycling, which is one of the chief reasons behind the failure of semiconductors. Under the concept of thermal cycling, things become bigger as they are heated and become smaller as they cool. However, keeping computers on can add 25 to 50 cents a day to energy costs and will require increased air conditioning, which uses large amounts of electricity. To remedy this problem, Microsoft has come up with a device that allows computers to go into a 'sleep' state of minimal energy use.
