Yoke of the majority: opposition decries constitutional changes
Article Abstract:
Opposition groups in Malaysia are protesting constitutional changes proposed by the ruling National Front coalition. They argue that the amendments would excessively strengthen central government and the majority party's power, and that too many changes have weakened the constitution's authority. The bill's backers counter that it would save time and money. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Mahathir Mohamad has instituted seven amendments since 1981, using his coalition's great majority.
