Silent night
Article Abstract:
China has recently stopped criticizing Hong Kong Governor Chris Patten's proposed political reforms, and some analysts feel that negotiations may be going on to improve Sino-British relations. Other analysts, however, feel that China is awaiting the Legislative Council's (Legco) reactions to Patten's proposals. Meanwhile, China has expressed hope of resumed cooperation with Britain. It has also reassured Hong Kong businessmen of its support as long as they respect the Basic Law, the mini-constitution for the future Hong Kong special administrative region (SAR.)

Middle of nowhere: political polarisation marginalises centrist parties
Article Abstract:
Three moderate political parties in Hongkong are striving to avoid outright support or opposition to Gov Chris Patten's proposed democratization. The three parties are Meeting Point, the Assn for Democracy and People's Livelihood and the Hongkong Democratic Foundation. They share a desire to promote democracy in Hongkong but only in a manner that does not provoke Chinese hostility. The parties hope to become the basis for a new political center in Hongkong after China takes over in 1997.
