Bob Dole should learn from the 1960 campaign, when Richard Nixon demonized the moderate Rockefeller, patronized conservatives and lost the election. Modern Republicans identify Rockefeller with big-government liberalism, but he later proposed downsizing the federal dole with block grants to states.

Wendell Willkie and the lure of the outsider

The current campaign of political outsider H. Ross Perot strongly resembles the 1940 campaign of Wendell Willkie. Both claim to be on the side of the people against career politicians. Willkie lost to Franklin Roosevelt.
