Reform in Poland, which has been proceeding at a slow pace, has been at least partially hampered by the ongoing feud between Pres Lech Walesa and Prime Minister Waldemar Pawlak.The feud was eventually won by Walesa, who forced parliament to change the government.

Polish citizens will go to the polls to elect a new parliament on Sep 21, 1997. The country's new leaders must take several steps in order to facilitate joining the European Union within a few years. Poland's economy is doing well but still needs strengthening.
