The UK market for in-car entertainment systems rose by 20% between 1990 and 1994 to reach 503 million pounds sterling. The market is divided into two main sectors: original equipment and the aftermarket. Total volume sales in the market were 5.88 million units in 1994, down 6.2% from 1990. The largest sector is original equipment, with a 54% share of value and 55.5% volume share. However, during the 1990-94 period, the aftermarket has grown the fastest, with value sales rising by 35.1% to 231 million pounds sterling.

It is forecast that some 700,000 widescreen television (TV) sets will be sold in the UK during 1999 but the sector remains small compared to the 4.7 million television sets sold in 1998. The leading players in the market include Sony, Panasonic and Philips, who account for a combined 75% of volume sales. Sales of widescreen TVs are expected to reach 2.1 million units by 2003, up 200% from 1999.
