Bacteria are known mostly in a restless planktonic form, but when starved they shrink into ultra-micro bacterium (UMB) stage and form biofilms when saturated with nutrients. Scientists are now applying these transformations to applications such as oil-well sealing and treating toxic wastes.

NASA researcher David McKay stunned the world when he announced in summer 1996, that the Mars meteorite ALH84001 appeared to contain two microfossils that could be nanobacteria, proving life once existed on Mars. However two teams of researchers since then have challenged the findings.
