In-store incentives
Article Abstract:
Retail sales in China's urban areas have grown more than 25% since the early 1990s and demand for imported goods is growing. Department store, supermarkets and chain/club stores are the fastest developing retail outlets. The most popular method of sales, and that used by most foreign retailers, is counter rentals and consignment sales. More resources are being spent on advertising and in-store promotions, but little effort is made in the area of customer service and repeat business.

Vulnerable to a downturn

The first wave of investment in the processed food market in China came in the mid-1990s, with the first Western-style supermarket opening in Shanghai in 1991 and the number of outlets rose from less than 300 in 1994 to almost 1,000 three years later. The retail sector has developed chains and convenience stores, but most of the supermarkets are under 100 square feet.
